The Conglomerates Own Organic #
Perhaps this shouldn’t have surprised me, but it did. As Good Magazine makes clear, all of my favorite “small” food brands are owned by conglomerates. Some day I’ll really learn that lesson.

Notable Registrants For the WWI Draft #
Just as I tell you nothing interesting’s online, this pops up in my feed reader (via Boing Boing): WWI draft registration cards for famous people. Unsurprisingly, they look a lot like my great-grandfather’s registration card from that period which I found last year. As you may expect, the latter has more personal significance but is less interesting to most people.
Testing a “Sonic Blaster” #
I’ve always thought the promise of sonic weapons was oversold. Maybe not:
First, I dispatched Nathan, my husband, out of the room, using the logic that if it really did make us sick, one of us should be spared. Then I realized I needed pictures, so I called him back in, and without warning, Goldman turned the Inferno on. I’m not sure words can do justice to what can only be described as the most unbearable, gut-wrenching noise I’ve ever heard in my life. I screamed a few expletives, Nathan almost dropped the camera, and Dr. Goldman turned it off. […]
How did I feel after the impromptu test? Nauseous, dizzy, or in pain? Hard to say, but Nathan looked pretty unhappy with me for the next hour or so. In fact, he still grumbles a bit when I mention his unwitting recruitment as a camera man/guinea pig. Love hurts.

Amazing Attic Staircase #
These are probably the most innovative and attractive attic stairs ever made. To take up less depth (I think that’s what I’d call that dimension) these stair are off-set from each other. It’s much harder to describe than to see.

Unknowing Twins Marry Each Other #
This isn’t actually news — it appears to have happened a while ago — but being half of a pair of mixed-sex fraternal twin it seemed morbidly interesting to me. The British pair had been adopted by separate couples at birth and didn’t find out they were related until after they were married. Strange indeed.

An Elevator-Testing Tower #
Mitsubishi has built a tower 573 feet (173m) tall that serves no other purpose than testing the really fast elevators that are needed for really tall buildings. I can’t decide if it’s a massive waste of material or a necessary cost of building land-use-efficient building. Have an opinion?
